lies on cinema

Chick flicks...to hate or not to hate, that is my question.

I just finished watching "The Holiday" with probably 12 or 14 girls. And as I sat on the couch with my hood up hide my tears, I was having an internal conflict. It was one of those angel on one shoulder, devil on the other type things. Honestly, I can't ever remember having one that badly before. Or ever for that matter. For as I sat there, watching this amazing romance unfold my heart when "aww" and my head when "AHHH!"

For you see, my heart really does long for that quote, un quote "love story." However, my brain tells me that it doesn't happen that way. But for real, if you have seen this movie...you will know what I am referring. Actually, you don't even need to see this one particular movie. Any chick flick will do.

Girls have been lied to their whole lives. We have been inundated with stories since we were 6 of finding the perfect "prince charming". Thank you Disney. Then as we grew older, we discovered "A Walk to Remember", "How to Loose a Guy in Ten Days", "Hitch", oh, and less we not forget the ever popular "Pride and Prejudice." I'm sorry, perhaps I am being pessimistic, but, life does not happen like that. Did we ever watch how after Bell and the Prince got married they fought, and argued over how they would raise the kids, or handle the money or the countless other issues that couples deal with? NO! Or, did we see any struggles after Hitch and Sara got together in keeping their crazy relationship? No, all we were shown is how things end up wonderfully in the end.

So, then my question is to the general public is, why are we feeding ourselves false truths. Relationships are wonderful yes. But they can also be a struggle...always worth it...but still, we are not fed that part of the story. And then once we do get in a relationship, we think that it should be like the movies and yet it's far from it. And our hearts are broken and we wonder why.

I want to hope that perhaps there is that love story out there for everyone. I really do. Right now, I just don't see it. And frankly...it ticks me off when I see movies like 'The Holiday' that make girls say, "why doesn't this ever happen to us?" and bawl when he says just the right thing. Sorry, ladies, but it's a lie.

Christian girls are always told, "God has a very special guy out there for you." True. But he's not found in the movies. He's found close to the heart of God. I just wish I believed that.
